Time and time again, Bosphorus cymbals prove to be that final missing element in a drum sound that can be bright, punchy and exciting without the usual sizzly, harsh, zingy non-sense up top. These days, without the "help" of tape coloration to sort of smooth the high frequencies, it's doubly important to get some actual instruments up on the cymbal stands... Instruments that speak with an honest voice, with personality, and above all musicality..... cymbals that don't need to be hidden behind old, ribbon microphones or low-pass filters to make them less painful.
These days I don't roll in to a tracking date without my bag of Bos. It's sort of the same scenario that plays out time and time again.
If the drummer has thrown up the usual assortment of machine-stamped tin, I'll do what I can to get things together in the control room and record a little bit so we can all listen (producer/engineer/artists). We'll scratch our heads, talk it over, make some adjustments...maybe have another playback. Somewhere along the line, I'll suggest we swap out the crashes for a couple things I've got and see how that'd be. Every, single time....shock and awe. Seriously. It's far from subtle.....Suddenly, the kit is 200x more listenable. You want to turn up the speakers, probably because it doesn't hurt anymore. Suddenly I can wheel a bit more snap in to the snare and toms as the whole top end of the kit isn't overpowered by harsh sizzly noise. At which point, I'll usually suggest we try a Bos ride...maybe some hats.
