I’d like to begin with a quote from Bob Dylan:
Come gather round people wherever you roam
And admit that the waters around you have grown
And accept it that soon you’ll be drenched to the bone.
If your time to you is worth savin’,
Then you better start a swimmin’ or you’ll sink like a stone
For the times they are a changing’.
I’m very excited to be here with you, because today we’re going to make a bit of history. It seems appropriate for the 50th anniversary of PASIC that we’re about to be a part of PASIC’s first ever clinic on virtual drumming. Set aside what you know about sampling, the new technology you’re about to experience represents a quantum leap in virtual instruments. Many of you have played electronic drum sets. Today’s clinic will focus on expanding the usefulness of these instruments by linking them to software, and the impact this is already having on the recording scene. There aren’t many people who make their living as sound designers. John Emrich is one of the best in the world. Most of the drum set sounds in the leading software drum engines are his. John also has an extensive resume as a player, having served as a career drummer in the premiere Navy bands assigned to the White House. Peter Erskine is no stranger to the digital world either. He’s been involved in several sample libraries over the years. Peter approached me about updating his digital offerings to reflect the recent advances in this technology. I immediately brought John into the project and soon we had finished Virtually Erskine, our sample library of Peter’s select drums, cymbals, and grooves. Some of you know me as the president of Bosphorus cymbals but I want to be clear that we are not presenting Peter as a Bosphorus artist, nor is Virtually Erskine a Bosphorus product. His endorsing companies’ products are respected and his personal sounds are faithfully reproduced in high definition audio. So here we are together at the start of what might be a new era for PASIC. After this presentation I hope you will have a better understanding of what this means to our industry and to you as drummers, because the times, they really are a changing’. Please help me in welcoming to the stage John Emrich and Peter Erskine.
Don’t miss this first ever PASIC clinic on virtual drumming featuring our software product, Virtually Erskine. John and Peter will walk you through the steps involved in recording a great virtual drum track and discuss the impact this technology is having in the recording industry. Saturday at 2:00 PM in room 120.
